Well hey you 2 dozen fans of the Practice Sessions who manage to find 'em the day after I post. You may like this one - I sure do. Something different; sounds like a room mic on this session which means you can pretty much hear everyone. And it's stereo. And a bonus - Stretch sitting in on drums - maybe the only time he came to practice - and what a difference he makes. I kinda remember this practice, certain things that were said, but don't remember if Bernie was there that night. Don't hear him in the mix. Anyways - this tape will give you a good idea what it sounded like in the room compared to all the board mixes that were later done. Vocals are a bit back, guitar tends to dominant at times, harp floats above.\

First track has some rhythm glitches - could be the tape or maybe just the Boys getting settled in. News Is Bad gets done twice - the second take is better once the guitars get it figured out. Love Larry's comment after Devil In Disguise, about it not being a first set tune - Charles is flat out on.\

Track 5 - Route 66 - ends with Charles explaining News, and in the back you can hear Stretch saying how to start the intro piece Scratch My Back which Larry does so well, given his voice and moxie. I loved listening to Charles sing Come Back Baby altho this take is kinda so-so. Again - what a difference to have Stretch playing, like on Fever, with that steady beat and those delicious fills.\

Papa's Got A Brand New Bag is a partial but it's a great set up to Shotgun > Funky Broadway - Jr Walker & Wilson Pickett - not sure if this medley ever got played live but it is awesome. After this things start winding down. Charles, the Human Jukebox as Larry called him (Stick a quarter in his ear and he plays all night), takes over. The second try on I'll Take Care of You is really nice as he coaxes the Boys out for one more. Then they start drifting away, heading out the door, and it's Crying Time Again.\
